Dentist Advice – 8 Steps To A Beautiful Smile!

08 Dec , 2020

A smile is the prettiest thing you can wear and it’s the first thing people notice about you. A healthy smile is something that requires time and patience to create and maintain and if you’re aspiring to get one overnight, well, it’s not that simple.

Below are 8 things that you can carry out to help enhance the health of your teeth and the appearance of your smile.

  1. Brushing – One of the primary steps in keeping your teeth clean is brushing. You need to brush twice a day and make sure you brush all areas in your mouth like the tongue, cheeks, sides of the mouth, roof of the mouth, gums etc. Make sure you use a good and effective toothbrush and replace yours once wear and tear is visible.
  2. Flossing – It’s just as important as brushing and it helps in eliminating plaque and other food particles that are lodged between your teeth, or in spaces where a brush cannot reach. Additionally, flossing prevents gum diseases and tooth decay.
  3. Avoid smoking/tobacco – Smoking can stain your teeth, sometimes the stain is only superficial wherein cleaning can get rid of it, but for heavy smokers, the stain soaks deep into the enamel and is difficult to remove. Furthermore, gums also get damaged due to smoking – it causes them to develop large pockets around the teeth and recede.
  4. Limit sodas, coffee and alcohol – Similar to smoking, tea, coffee and alcohol can stain your teeth which can be superficial and can be removed but at times can also stain through the enamel. Sodas and other sugary beverages if left to rest on your teeth for a long time can cause bacteria to feed on them and eventually leading to decay or worse. It’s best to avoid sugary drinks or those that contain additives and stick to more natural juices. Rinsing your mouth thoroughly after consuming these liquids is suggested.
  5. Consume a balanced diet – Food provides nutrients to our entire body which includes the teeth and gums. Hence, eating healthy foods, greens, vegetables, fruits, etc. and getting all the right nutrients not only aids in keeping our overall body healthy but our teeth and gums too. If you get proper nutrition then the chances of oral health diseases are reduced.
  6. Drinking lots of water – Water is super healthy for your body and overall health as well as your smile. It helps clean teeth and washes out food particles, battles plaque and also obstructs tooth decay. Swap your sodas and other sugary juices with water and see the instant difference. Drink at least 8 glasses per day.
  7. Improve other health conditions – Other ailments like high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes and bruxism (teeth grinding) can affect the appearance and health of your teeth. If the body is focused more on curing one illness, the others often get overlooked. Rather than covering up, make changes like eat right, exercise, drink water etc. to feel the difference.
  8. Visit your dentist regularly – Going for regular checkups to the dentist is recommended. Visit them at least thrice a year to know what’s going on in your mouth and to get solutions to problems at the initial stages instead of waiting them out.
