The famous psychologist, Sigmund Freud said that, people who have delayed gratification in their early oral stage will develop habits that will involve gratification in their oral libido. So which means if you’re constantly chewing gum, you could have a psychological problem. Just kidding! It could actually be good for you, especially if you’re chewing sugar free chewing gum!

So here’s what happens in our mouth after a meal:

  1.  The post food world in your mouth is one that is heavily being attacked by acids leftovers in your mouth that has been derived from the food itself.
  2. This acid persists and then there’s a birth of massive oral bacteria which is actually a little gross and scary.
  3. So, the bacteria attack your enamel and soften it and also produce a light film of a seemingly oily texture around it called plaque.
  4. If you’re lax about washing your mouth thoroughly and hitting it with a toothbrush after a meal, then you are possibly allowing this environment to thrive.
  5. And then, you have cavities the size of craters on the moon. Pssst… Just imagine! J

How can sugar free gum change your life, then?

 You can protect your mouth and especially your teeth and gums from growing through any or all of the aforementioned stages by simply picking up a sugar free chewing gum and chewing on it a little after you rinse your mouth with water.

What does this do, you ask? Well, it forces the salivary gland in your mouth to produce saliva which is your body’s natural defense system against acidity in the mouth. After you’ve eaten, it takes as long as an hour for your mouth to get back to a state of neutral pH and this is bad if you’ve been eating food that has corrosive elements like acids in fruits, sugars in drinks etc.

This means that while your mouth is trying desperately hard to fight off this infiltration, bacteria is flourishing and the excessive mouth acids are royally attacking your enamel. Chewing gum for about twenty minutes after a meal can actually help your mouth produce saliva a lot faster and then brings it back to its neutral state. So in all this, let’s say in twenty minutes, you’re cutting down the 60 minute waiting frame. It also prevents bacteria from sticking to your teeth; all this provided, you chew sugar free chewing gum!

Here are some last minute pointers that you may want to be aware of:

  • Forgive the ones who told you that chewing gum once swallowed will stay in your tummy for five years because that’s absolute nonsense. This won’t happen. Much like anything else you eat, it gets processed and sees its end the same way!
  • Chewing gum is only a temporary defense mechanism to regulate mouth pH. So if you have dry mouth and halitosis, it isn’t an absolute cure.
  • Speaking of which, chewing gum should not be used as a toothbrush replacement, you still have to brush your teeth after you eat.
  • Do not give your children chewing gum because they’re children. And it could be habit formation.
